One of my favorite perks when I lived in Chicago was that there were so many cool weekend trip options. Last summer I finally took a weekend trip to the land of beer and cheese–Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I visited breweries old and new, the architecturally magnificent Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Fonz amongst wandering the streets of downtown.

milwaukee wisconsin mitchell buildingThe Mitchell Building downtown, built in 1876, is presumed to have been built as a residence for Milwaukee’s first mayer, Solomon Juneau. The Second Empire style mansion later housed a bank.

Many of the structures in the massive complex have been repurposed into the likes of a hotel, condos, event spaces and bars, but some have been left untouched.

pabst brewery milwaukee wisconsin pbrAfter chatting with a member of the gift shop staff, I ended up getting an unofficial private tour of the buildings. We explored construction areas, dilapitated corridors, and the old bottling plant (shown below), which is owned by another company and usually blocked off even to the staff.

pabst mansion milwaukee wisconsin pbrHaving had such a fabulous back stage pass to the brewery, I had to check out the Pabst Mansion.

milwaukee museum of art wisconsinThese “wings” on the Milwaukee Museum of Art open and close every day. I stayed to watch the evening show, despite the oncoming storm.
